How Mr. Trash Wheel keeps plastic out of the ocean

It’s hard to know what to make of Mr. Trash Wheel, with his mechanical innards and huge googly-looking eyes. And even John Kellett, his creator, had doubts about whether it was a good idea to humanize a machine that was doing a serious job, scooping up the tonnes of garbage and litter that made its way downstream after every storm into Baltimore Harbor. The harbour connects to Chesapeake Bay, which is an estuary to the Atlantic Ocean.
