The first trash interceptor of its kind, Mr. Trash Wheel, was invented by environmental scientist and shipbuilder John Kellett and commissioned by the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore. Mr. Trash Wheel, a trash interceptor located at the mouth of the Jones Falls River, has been a symbol of Baltimore's dedication to cleaning up its waterways. Since its installation in 2014, Mr. Trash Wheel has removed millions of pounds of debris from the Inner Harbor, preventing pollution from reaching the Chesapeake Bay. In addition to collecting a million pounds of litter and debris each year, the trash wheels harness their googly-eyed personalities to educate the public and provide data to inform trash reduction legislation related to waste reduction.
