Harbor Scholars
Professional Learning Workshops

Engage your students in solving real environmental problems in the Chesapeake Bay watershed through hands-on, outdoor science investigations.
Harbor Scholars is an exciting professional development opportunity for 3rd-5th grade science teachers in Baltimore City. Participants will learn how to deliver effective, Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) in which students investigate and take action on a real, local environmental issue in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
The summer workshop will take place from July 15–19, 2024, 9:00am - 1:00pm.
All sessions will be in-person at the Towson University Center for STEM Excellence, located at the Rita Rossi Colwell Center, 701 E Pratt Street.
Support will be provided throughout the school year, with a final session on May 17, 2025.

For Teachers
Harbor Scholars is designed to help you get your students excited about the Chesapeake Bay. You’ll learn about the Bay through our summer workshop, which includes hands-on investigations and outdoor field experiences. During the school year, you’ll take that learning into your classroom: you’ll implement the investigations with your students, bring them on a field trip to the Inner Harbor, and facilitate a student action project to help save the Bay! Teachers are eligible for a $900 participation stipend, action project funding, continuing education credits, classroom support, and more!

For Students
Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) are learner-centered experiences that actively engage students in building knowledge and meaning through hands-on investigation of local environmental issues.
The Harbor Scholars program equips teachers to let their students take the lead in investigating and taking action on environmental issues in the Chesapeake Bay watershed through student-led environmental action projects.
All Harbor Scholars participants receive a free field trip to the Inner Harbor for students! Harbor Scholars field trips take about four hours and consist of an EcoTour and a hands-on SciTech lab investigation on a Chesapeake Bay science topic.
